Kitchen projects - our new vintage oven

We began this "spontaneous" kitchen update (although we'd sort of planned out what we'd do for the last four years) and didn't give much thought to the fact that everything would be changed.  We really need to gut our kitchen and start new, but without the money for a $50,000 kitchen in the bank that's just not possible!  Fortunately, I had begun saving up for my $50K kitchen remodel two years ago and had saved $1200!  (Oooh, I know...big money for a kitchen!).  Well, we have that much to make over this kitchen, so here's our somewhat not-so-organized attempt. Although, I have begun to organize as much as I possibly can in the chaos.   I have to say, first of all, that I have a superbly, wonderful, handy hubby!  He can fix just about anything, as you'll be seeing in the next few weeks (I'm hoping not months)...

Cool organizing product!

My husband came home the other day with this very cool, very unique bike rack!

Is this not the neatest thing?  It holds up to SIX bikes and can roll in and out of the garage!!  I think I'm rubbing off on him.  He got it here while out for a tool store run!

Weekend project - tearing down a wall

So, my spontaneous husband decided we needed to knock down a wall between the dining room and kitchen (we have talked about doing it since we moved in here four years ago)....which of course has now led us into this new territory of re-doing the kitchen!

Organizing your linen closet (part 3) - the other stuff and folding towels

Feel free to go back over this series.

OK, so now that we've gone through all our old sheets and gotten those out and learned how to fold all our sheets, what else is in your linen closet?  Well, I'll tell you what's in mine:

Setting up for your babysitter

I should organize things for my babysitter?  Well, not exactly. But, yes you should!  I remember babysitting years and years ago...and having great experiences and not-so-great experiences!  Here's a few tips that I've learned being a parent and being a babysitter:

1.  If it's a new sitter, give them a schedule of the evening.  Either written on a piece of paper or chalkboard. Then, go over the schedule with them and explain how things work in your house.

2.  Be flexible about the schedule!  Stuff happens, so if they put the kids to bed ten minutes late, it's not a big deal.

One of my favorite organizing books

Here is one of my favorite books on organization!  I got this after I was married back in 1994.  You can still buy it, too!  It's a small book with less than 100 pages - 7 x 7 inches small!

Weekend Project: Laundry Room Skirted sink

Here is a great project that I did on our ugly basement utility sink.  I was inspired recently by THIS blog on laundry room inspirations and noticed all the sinks with their pretty skirts!  This was my laundry room sink - pretty ugly!  I have to be careful because my husband's workshop is in this basement along with my laundry area - and it's not quite as beautiful as the laundry rooms in that blog, but I'm working on getting it looking a little more pleasant to do my laundry down there.

Linen Closet - where is yours?

So, where do you have your linen closet?  Is it in your bathroom, hallway, perhaps you don't even have one?  We're going to start our next series on organizing your linen closet!  Yep, it's a hazardous place, but each Wednesday this month we'll go through all kinds of linen closet ideas and inventiveness (is that even a word?).

Looking out to see what's there...a small project

We are one of a handful of southern Californian's that actually have a basement, not a cellar, but a real basement.  Now, it's probably not a basement like the rest of the country has, but we have one nonetheless!  I love having it as it has afforded us a lot of extra space to store things -things that we mostly use for all the many events and guests that we have here at our house.  It also has my laundry "room" and my husband's work shop down there.  It's only about 300 square feet, but it's wonderful!  However, I have to look out my laundry room window and see this awful view every time I do the laundry.
